awesome August 17, 2010 claudis This machine is the best invention ever for cake decorators. Of course it takes some time to get used to and also figure out what materials to use but i find Gum Paste to be the best with this machine. There are so many shapes, letters, etc that you can get from this machine and will take so much time away from cutting gum paste or fondant to make those decorations.
I recommend it.
Great designs June 9, 2010 Soledad Aldana (El Paso TX) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my first cricut machine ever. But I have been working with fondant/gumpaste for quite a time now. As other people have commented, it has a learning curve, but so does decorating cakes. One cann't expect to decorate a wedding cake just by purchasig tips and decorating bags.
The instructions need to be improved, but you have to practice at it. It is a great investment for a business, saves me a lot of time making beautiful cuts I would have to make by hand.
Great new toy for cake decorators! June 6, 2010 S. Wagner 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a cake decorator, I love the new choices I have with this. I was a bit frustrated at first with the cuts bunching up, but after reading the brochure at Michael's Crafts about freezing your mats with the gumpaste on it before putting it in the machine for cutting, my cuts are much cleaner. I give it 4 stars because it is really good for larger cuts but smaller cuts give you some grief no matter what. Also, I wish the lettering was on the keypad, but you have to look at the book to see which key corresponds to the letter, but after awhile I realized the letters are set up just like a keyboard, but still wish they were on the keypad. Also, each letter takes awhile to come up on the display, I like to move quickly, and this seems to take forever sometimes. I bought the gypsy for it, so hopefully that will help.
Regret. May 17, 2010 S. Kim (So. Cal.) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Needless to say, this was a huge splurge for me. I was so incredibly excited to get the cricut cake and intoxicated by all the cool things this machine promised. However, it has not worked. I've spent hours trying to get it to cut a simple design but haven't had much luck. I've followed the directions exactly and tried all the tips that other users have suggested online. Even on the lowest tension, the blade cut my mat. I don't know what the learning curve on this thing is but I have a FT job and a family and can't devote weeks on figuring this out. In my opinion, the instructions are grossly defective. I'm going to give it one more shot and if it doesn't work, it's going back.
Tricks for success... May 14, 2010 Kitchens and Chemistry 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying that I've never used a Cricut product before, but I've been using gumpaste and fondant for about a year on my cakes. This is a fabulous machine. There is a learning curve, but it will work once you figure out the right consistency for your edible materials and with a bit of adjustment to the instructions. You really can cut the intricate designs, not just the basic hearts and whatnot. So don't give up!
First, roll your gumpaste/fondant really thin. As in, you can see the lines on the mat through it. They say to freeze it to help avoid tearing--if you roll it thin, you can use it at room temp. I couldn't get it to work at all frozen, because the condensation from the air on the cold gumpaste pretty much instantly turned it to goo. In general, I think that gumpaste works better than fondant.
Second, if you make your own gumpaste or fondant, you may want to add a bit more powder sugar than usual. Go for structure over flexibility.
Third, use a very very small amount of water (instead of shortening) on the mat if you are having trouble with the material gumming up the machine and sliding around the mat. I wiped the mat down with a damp cloth and tried it with both gumpaste and fondant. The dampness from the cloth is enough to get the sugar to stick to the mat, and it doesn't slide around as much as it does on shortening. Be warned that it will be trickier to get your designs off the mat if you use water--you may have to refrigerate or freeze them after you're done cutting. If you get the material thin enough, the shortening will work, but the thicker stuff I used worked much better with water.
So all in all, are you going to be an instant designer cake decorator with this? No--you have to understand that you're working with sugar, and sugar can be finicky, and there's going to be some trial and error. But you don't have to be a professional to get it to work, either. You just have to be patient.
